Coir information

coir information

Introduction to coir

Coir is a substance derived from the husks of coconuts. It is perfect for trash bags because, it is completely biodegradable, durable, and fairly water proof. It is also perfect because it takes 5 years to biodegrade so it won't rot in your trash can. Coir is also very cheap at around $5.62 a kilogram.

FLL project - Overkill - team #19238 - Driggs, Idaho

Hello. We are Overkill, an FLL team from Driggs Idaho. This is our project to change the world by making biodegradable, eco-friendly trash bags.

Intro: We wanted to make more eco-friendly trash bags.

Problem: Current plastic bags are made of polyethylene. Polyethylene in its basic form is not biodegradable.

What we did: We developed a plan to make garbage bags from thin layers of coir, a fiber made from coconut husks.

What we found out: Coir is totally biodegradable, it makes a great material to make trash bags out of, and the fibers can be intertwined easily to make a bag.

Key impact: Replacing polyethylene bags with coir ones will cut down on space in landfills as it biodegrades, and will also cut down on carbon emissions from factories producing plastics.
